Thermal load first
Switchgear heat load is dominated by busbar and breaker losses, and it rises with current. A cabinet that runs cool at 60% load can exceed its rating at 100%, so we calculate at the design current rather than the nameplate average.
Corrosion
Substation sites near coastlines need epoxy-coated coils and galvanised housings. We test to 500 hours of salt spray; below that, the coil fins fail before the compressor does.
